fix(app2): static analysis: the final cut (#4577)

Preservation of behavior has been preferred over cleanliness where
necessary.

- Trivial type issues fixed outright.
- Important code that requires more complex investigation and
consideration may have errors _expected_.
- Unimportant or unused code paths may have errors _expected_.
- `XXX` style comments provided with next steps when errors ignored.
